Drinking Water from Air
Having an easy access to clean water would be great, especially when we are facing a water crisis. A research team led by Guihua Yu from the University of Texas at Austin and co-author of the study Fei Zhao made it possible through a solar-powered moisture harvester from air that produces clean and usable water.
The gathering of water from air is made possible through the combination of hydrogels that absorbs the water. By exposing the hydrogels to heat or through natural sunlight for about five minutes, clean and usable water will be released. It was proven to work in areas with humid and dry weather conditions. The research team designed the technology to be solar-powered to avoid intensive energy consumption.
Gathering of water from moisture is not a new concept because most of the refrigerators now a days use that concept to keep things cool. However, it requires lots of energy to do it. This invention could improve the atmospheric water harvesting technique and could even replace other moisture-absorbing techniques.
