New Micro Implants which could Restore Standing and Walking
When trying to fix an injured spinal cord, three factors are considered. Brain signals are to be translated. The spinal cord needs to be comprehended and controlled. The severed connection needs to be fixed. According to the research, the spinal cord also possesses the capacity to have intelligence. A series of motor and sensory networks regulate several bodily functions whilst the brain gives the signal to proceed or stop.
Other avenues in trying to restore movement in spinal damage try to send electrical impulses into lower body muscles, this method can help people use their legs once again. Although this method works, it’s not effective in the long run. The new micro implants seeks to plunge deep into the spinal grey matter, consistently sending electrical signals that triggers the networks that already know how to do the hard work. A new paper published in Scientific Reports showcased the parts of the spinal cord that triggers the movement of some body parts and the areas that make the whole body work.
In the future, the team is looking in to fine tuning the hardware by miniaturizing an implantable simulator and securing Health Canada and FDA approvals for clinical trials. It’s been previously researched that the problem is translating brain signals and intent into commands to the intraspinal implant; however, the first generation of the intraspinal implants will require a patient to control walking and movement. Future innovations may include implants that could make a direction connection from the spinal cord to the brain.
